Nabi Saleh Protests: Small and Mighty

Photo Blog by Dylan Collins

Nabi Saleh is quite a tiny village. With approximately 550 people, almost all of its residents are members of the same family – the Tamimis. Upon arriving, one is immediately welcomed as part of the family. I arrived in Nabi Saleh at around 10 AM and was treated to two breakfasts and about 5 glasses of tea before the demonstration started at 1 PM.

Each Friday, the village coordinates a non-violent demonstration to protest against the neighboring illegal Israeli settlement of Halamish (which has annexed Nabi Saleh’s Ein al-Qaws fresh water spring and agricultural land) as well as Israel’s occupation at large. Each Friday, neighboring Palestinians, Israelis, and international activists make their way to the village to stand in solidarity with its residents.

Despite the peaceful nature of Nabi Saleh’s demonstration, it is unfailingly met with drastic and forceful repression by Israeli armed forces via unrelenting waves of tear gas, ‘skunk’ water, and rubber-coated steel bullets.

One of the most striking aspects of the village are its children. In the last three protests, three of Nabi Saleh’s children have been shot directly in the face with rubber-coated steel bullets by Israeli armed forces.
