Ofer court reduces sentence against Shalabi, she is adamant on hunger strike

RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- The Israeli military court in Ofer decided on Sunday to reduce the administrative detention sentence against Hana’a Shalabi to six instead of eight months.

The hearing was held in the absence of Shalabi, who has been on hunger strike for 18 days in Hasharon jail. 

However, Shalabi decided to go on in her hunger strike demanding an immediate end to her detention.

Damir foundation for human rights said that the court judge refused the lawyer’s request for summoning witnesses to testify on the way Shalabi was arrested, especially the beating and forced strip search.

It said that the court refused the presence of witnesses because it knows that it would mean ordering her immediate release as her detention was illegal.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian prisoner’s association in Jenin said in a statement on Sunday that Shalabi was enjoying high morale despite her apparent weakness due to the hunger strike.

A lawyer for the association, who met Shalabi earlier Sunday, said that she appeared exhausted and her body was rapidly collapsing.
